Is this a good book idea??

I think the idea of his parents being too predictable and don't understand the important things is good, but then you go way off track. You do the most predictable thing ever by chasing the cheerleader and joining the sports teams. These things are not only really predictable but not important. Have the kid travel, learn something important about life, or at the very least chase a girl that is more then the stereotypical pretty object.
